In 1833, Earl Grey, the Earl of Howick Hall, and at the time British Prime Minister, suspended the price monopoly which the East India company had enjoyed at China’s expense. The originally pure Chinese tea was lightly flavored with fine bergamot oil to protect the tea from mold and tar, which could form during long sea voyages. Early Grey is the embodiment of the finest English tea.
