At this year's SCAA Roaster Choice Competition we took first place.
The decision came at SCAA’s 24th Annual Exposition, in late April of this year, at Portland’s Oregon Convention Center. There, the Roasters Guild, a trade group of the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) – and the world's premier coffee authority and largest coffee trade association – named one of our coffees as its First Place selection.
The coffee in question was Granja La Esperanza, grown at the Cerro Azul farm (or finca) in Colombia. The remarks on its tasting notes are “orange, floral, fruity, citrus, sweet and smooth”.
According to SCAA’s website, the purpose of this competition is to “highlight the art and craft of coffee roasting”. As a small Toronto coffee roastery, this first place billing is a huge honour for us. All the hard labour and mad science has been worth it, and we strive to better ourselves everyday.
Submissions at the competition were all single origin, washed coffee beans, which each competitor had roasted using proprietary techniques in order to bring out their beans’ unique characteristics and flavours. All Expo attendees were asked to vote for their favorite in a blind tasting of the top five coffees, which had been determined prior to the event.
